Many people are unaware that there is a certain time frame in which you can lodge your claim with the Road Accident Fund (RAF). If you lodge your claim after the specified time frame the RAF will not consider your application.
When can you lodge your RAF claim?
So how soon after the accident can you lodge your claim? If you know the identity of the driver that was the sole cause of the accident, you must lodge the claim within three (3) years from the date on which the accident occurred. If you are a minor, you have 3 years to submit the claim once you have turned 18.
In the case of a hit and run accident where you do not know the identity of the driver who caused the accident a special period applies. You must lodge your claim within two (2) years from the date on which the accident occurred.
Lodging a claim with the Road Accident Fund for a hit and run
You can lodge a claim with the RAF for a hit and run incident only if the accident occurred on South African roads. Furthermore, it involved another vehicle and was a result of negligence by the unknown driver.
To claim from the RAF in a hit and run incident, report the accident at the police station as soon as possible! You will need to submit the following information when lodging your claim with the RAF:
- Details of the accident
- Police report
- Case number
- Medical and Financial statements
